Other than purchasing expensive “organic” food from the grocery store; Many urbanites think they can’t do anything to live a more healthy, organic lifestyle and so sometimes they just throw their hands up in despair, giving in to the pressures of their perceived doom, at the mercy of the modern food supply.

While it certainly is true that “growing your own” is more challenging then their rural counterparts; There are many things that city dwellers can do to effectively lower their food bills while simultaneously eating a more healthy, Biblical diet. Of course not all things are for all people but there are many options. Start now to live a healthier, happier, Biblical lifestyle right where you are!

One alternative is to host a few chickens in your back yard. Growing chickens in the city is beginning to be more and more popular and accepted. As food and other resources become more and more corrupt, this may be a consideration. Besides just being fun, chickens can provide enjoyment, conversation, eggs, meat, feathers and garden fertilizer. Plus they can also be labor savers to help you work up a garden area to prepare for planting and they can also help to organically keep the bug population under control. Obviously this consideration won’t benefit all city dwellers but perhaps it could fit into your Sustainable Living plan.

Hens are very quiet animals and they don’t require a rooster to produce eggs. Therefor they can be raised in an urban environment with very little neighborhood disturbance. Many municipalities do not have any ordinances that prohibit the raising of chickens and so if this is interesting to you there is no reason not to start your backyard brood. Click here for a good resource to get started.

Do you live in a suburban or rural area that is close to an urban area? Then you may consider marketing your expertise in these backyard type productions as a supplier and or consultant for others in the city who are just beginning.

Agriculture is referenced all through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. It is the Messiah’s desire that all His people unite together as one flock.

Luke 13:34
(Yeshua said)… how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings…!

Perhaps we have some things to learn from the chicken.

I'll see you in the field,
