A vital part of ‘Sustainable Living” is gardening. You may have heard me reference various types of gardens such as victory gardens, square foot gardens, wide row gardens, raised bed gardens, kitchen gardens, market gardens, indoor gardens or if you have been around for a while you may remember the name “truck garden”.

Many people in apartments or similar situations think they don’t have any options. But they do. Granted there are some issues that need to be resolved but there are viable options for the creative apartment / inner city dweller who desires the Sustainable Living lifestyle.

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed;
to you it shall be for meat.

Genesis 1:29

One very urban gardener I know of actually farms for a living (sort of). He has eighteen vegetable garden spots that he tends to daily. He lives in the inner city and bicycles to each one, makes arrangements with the property owners to access their back yards, and lives on the produce sales. Now that’s creative!

But if that doesn’t ride your bike, row your boat, and you want to do something there are things you can do besides utilizing another’s ground (which is a good way to go). There is also container gardening. This can be turned into an art form that can even enhance your apartment. Decks can be utilized for container gardening and if there is no deck then just keep the containers inside. Some crops don’t even like a lot of light and so keeping them inside won’t impede their growth.

If you’re really tight on space there is always sprouting. Sprouts are some of the most nutritious foods known to man and they can be (even should be) grown in the dark.

So see? There is something for everyone, regardless of your situation, if you are really serious about a Sustainable Living lifestyle and eating healthy food.
